Thank goodness for washable markers

Davin had another brilliant art moment today: body art. Unfortunately this work will not be available for purchase and the exhibit was destroyed with soap and water. As he stated, "mwarker", which means that art is sometimes a transitory part of life to be experienced and captured with a photograph.

A little trip down South

So that the posts below make sense, we took a trip last week to Charleston, South Carolina (2 nights), Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (3 nights) and Savannah, Georgia (just for the day). For more photos, please see our online photo album "Fun in the Sun- Southern Style": http://picasaweb.google.com/katiearees/FunInTheSunSouthernStyle

Playing at the beach

Need I say more? We spent three nights at a resort in Hilton Head and we literally didn't do anything but play on the beach or at the pool. It was lovely being lazy, and yet we were sore afterwards. Hilton Head was unexpected; instead of a raw strip of hotels like many of the other East Coast beaches we have visited, it was very organic. The trees were so thick leading up to the beach, it was rare to catch a glimpse of the sandy strip from the road. Our resort was a beach-front property, but it didn't look that way at first. We enjoyed watching herons, cranes, and kingfishers along the shore and in the wetlands, and even caught a glimpse of a school of dolphins. Davin had a great time playing in the sand and running out into the chilly waves.

They sure do fry a lot down here

I ate my first reptile on this trip. Chris ordered Gator Bites at the Sea Shack on Hilton Head Island. They were a little chewy, but kind of like dark chicken meat. Of course they were fried. We enjoyed a variety of Lowcountry fare including fried oysters, fried local shrimp, fried flounder, fried scallops, fried crab cakes, fried hushpuppies, etc. We tried the infamous boiled peanuts, but neither Chris, Davin, nor I were sold on them. They taste d like warm, salty Garbanzo beans, which isn't all that bad but not what you would expect from a peanut. Davin, however, seemed to enjoy everything else and happily consumed some strange delights such as fried oysters, Gator bites, and an apple covered in sand (a beach speciality only he seemed fond of). Our favorite restaurant was Clary's in Savannah- it was worth going to Savannah just to eat there. Chris had Malted Waffles Supreme and helped Davin with his Georgia Pecan Pancakes. I had Eggs Benedict Clary's style, with a nice cr...

something stinky

Somewhere on Logan and Market, we had a major diaper spill. Poop unloaded on the road in front of some really nice homes in Charleston. The smell was so foul, I almost couldn't keep it in. Davin just grinned- he didn't seem to notice too much. I think Chris was a little uncomfortable. Who would have thought that horses wore diapers? We took a carriage tour of Charleston, which overall was a charming experience despite our driver's bad jokes and sitting directly behind the Brock's rear (our horse). We learned a little about Charleston, though I think that our knowledgeable host spread more urban legends than fact. However, you can believe almost anything in such a lovely and unique place. A steaming pile of seafood doesn't hurt either. (Watch out for people trying to sell you time shares, though; they are all over Charleston and they attack when you least expect.) Welcome to Chaars-tn

Homes on the East Battery For those of you who don't speak Southern, Chaars-tn is the grammatical spelling for Charleston, a charming city along the South Carolina coast. We arrived this evening and we are already feeling the warmth of Southern hospitality. After checking into our hotel, we headed downtown to see what we could see in the dark. So far the rumors are true- the homes in Charleston are fabulous. Davin was more taken with the harbor, though he was fascinated with an arched front door framed with an elegantly trimmed English Boxwood. He ran up and down the sidewalk which lines the harbor near the Battery, pausing every few feet to clap and say "Oooh", or to climb up on the railings and point at the "wights" and the "water." We even caught a firework show across the harbor. Despite packing everything else in the house, I forgot to bring the cable to my camera so pictures will have to wait until next week. I promise to make them worth the wait...

A Davin Original

Announcing the first-ever Davin Rees original-"Balls", a washable marker on paper. This 16X16 piece was created in studio by the budding artist. When asked about his inspiration, he thoughtfully said: "balls." It is a concept so simple, yet so profound. The original is available, though several inquiries have a lready been made. Limited edition prints will be made available later this year, so reserve your copy early.

Nothing really noteworthy, just a new couch

It is time for a new era of sitting in the Rees household. We inherited a set of couches from my parents when we were first married, couches that had been in my parents' living room for nearly twenty years. I didn't anticipate we would keep them for very long, but three moves and five years later, those hardy couches have finally gone on to a new life in our friends' basement. Our n ew couches almost didn't make it in the door and I don't look forward to moving them out again. In the meantime, we will enjoy the deep cushions for a lengthy movie, cushions that Davin almost disappears in. Happy Sitting!
