Happy Halloween!

Our costumes these year aren't a huge leap. We are BYU fans. I'm pregnant this year and it seems to have drained my Halloween creativity a little. Davin is a football player, I'm his crazed-fan mother, and Chris is the ref who is having a little trouble seeing the game. We hope that everyone has a great Halloween! Davin really is a super fan, though, but not so much for BYU (we are working on that). Chris took Davin to a Wake Forest football game not too long ago and it had a major influence. Apparently in nursery last week during their prayer, he started repeating over and over again "Go Deacons!" (The Wake mascot is the Demon Deacon.)

Moms always know how to make things better

Even though I'm all "grown-up" (there are days when I wonder if this is true), I still need my mom. Today was a perfect example. Last week, my doctor advised me to try taking an antacid medication to see if it would help my morning sickness. For a few days, I felt great. I even started to think that maybe we had found the answer, maybe this was the cure. Again (as I stated in a previous blog), feeling good can be the most discouraging thing of all. This morning my oatmeal refused to stay down, so what could I do but oblige it? I was at the church helping to decorate for our ward Halloween party, and as I have learned to do, I tidied myself up and finished decorating the church. I tried to suck it up by telling myself that this was nothing new and that there is a cure-- having a baby. But deep-down, I was a little discouraged. After a long day of the usual, compounded by Chris not being home for the entire day and evening (again), I came home ready to wrestle Davin to bed ...

Nothing witty to say, just a general update

What are the Rees' up to these days, you may be asking yourself. Well, it is a good thing you checked our blog because here is a post to satisfy your inquiring mind. Chris is still in school and enjoying his classes, though he probably does more extra-curricular activities than he does school work. He is also interviewing for real, grown-up jobs, the kind that give you an annual salary and health insurance. He is dedicated to convincing these companies that he is more than an econ nerd, but instead the next charismatic leader that will change their company's future. He was good enough to convince me that he was a charming enough young man to stake the next eternity on, so I'm sure that one company will find him convincing as well. Davin is moving onward on his journey to tackle the potty. We have successes and failures, but more successes than failures, so we keep moving forward. He loves nursery these days (thanks to some great nursery leaders), watching football with hi...

A few more Davinisms

Here are a few more vignettes highlighting the things that make us smile: Davin learns Southern Southerners are known for their hospitality and this is apparent in Davin's newest addition to his vocabulary. Lately, whenever he wants something to eat or drink, Davin will say "ya'll drink?" or "ya'll food?". He's heard that asked of him, so it makes sense that he should say the same when he wants something to eat or drink. Paper towels, the magic cure-all Most kids seem to be very fond of band-aids and ask for them even if they don't have an injury. Davin hates band-aids and does not like to wear them. However, at even the slightest bump or bruise, he asks for a paper towel. Apparently paper towels have excellent curing properties, something I plan to bring up to the medical community. Down, set, hike Admittedly, we do watch a little football in this household and as Davin is a fan of anything ball, it was inevitable that he would pick up some foot...

Do you need to go potty?

This question chimes regularly around our house these days. Chris and I are constantly asking "Do you need to go potty?" as if we were checking for vital signs. Yep, it's potty time at the Rees household and Davin is the star. We are having a potty party here, coupled with party treats and potty toys. I went to Target to get prepared and left after spending a fortune. The potty training industry makes a killing off of vulnerable first-time potty training parents. They make you feel like you can purchase a potty trained child. However, so far, so good. We have had some failures, but ultimately more successes. Davin seems to be catching on but we still have a little work to do. He is really excited to be done with diapers; he continuously says "no more diapers!"

Toys of all sizes

Sometimes I wonder why we spend any money on Davin's toys. He seems perfectly capable of making toys out of nothing or very little. He is as excited about toys at the dollar store as he is excited about big toy sets from Target. Anything can be a toy or source of entertainment. Even Chris and I serve the purpose. These days, I find myself not moving as fast and sometimes laying on my side. Davin has found the driving his car from my toes, up my side, and all the way to my head makes a great road combined with "bridges." He knows what the road is supposed to look like as well. He'll adjust my legs and arms to fit his image of the road, and he'll get frustrated if I don't bend my limbs the way that he thinks they should be. The wheels tickle a little as he pushes his car back and forth along the "road." At least I'm interacting with him in a way that allows me to take a break as well.

Watch out Southern Belles! Here come the grandmas!

My mom and Grandma Winter came to visit us last week and it was great to see them. Davin had a great time getting to know his grandmas better and he became really attached to them. I miss them entertaining him as well. He keeps asking to "go get grandma" and "go to the airport." He even asked "Grandma lost?" It has to be a little confusing to have two women sweep into his life one day, spend a week spoiling him, and then disappear all of the sudden. My grandma has always wanted to visit Savannah and we couldn't miss out on an opportunity to show her a town that we have recently grown to love. For the first leg of their trip, we took the grandmas to stay at Hilton Head at the same hotel where we stayed last March. They loved the beach and the fried seafood shack we took them to. We spent Friday in Savannah and had a great time. Chris and I definitely enjoyed the city much more this time as we spent more time walking from city square to city square (I t...
