We are winding down our school year and Davin's class had a big finale: his first school play! I love Davin's school! They emphasize "multiple intelligences" or in other words, celebrating the different areas in which students excel rather than focusing strictly on academics. Students in first grade, third grade, and fifth grade do a production during the year and they are amazing! Students are involved at all levels, focusing more on the learning experience rather than the one "star" of the show. Davin's grade did their show this week and it was so much fun! I was really impressed with how well the students knew their songs, dances, and lines. The show was themed around the Magic Tree House books, a recent favorite at our house and Davin's class's portion was Pirates Past Noon . If Davin didn't have enough fun celebrating his birthday in Utah, we made sure he did with a birthday party with his friends in Charlotte. The party started with the perfect day: 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky! We started with roasting hot dogs over a fire. Yum! Then it was time to dress like Ninja for their ninja training.  We did Spinjitzu blindfolded and tried to get our Shurikens to hit the Serpentine.  Then we took our Shuriken frisbees to the top of the mountain to test our strength.  We finished our training with a quest. Scrolls hidden around the yard led us on an adventure to find our "fire swords."  We finished by defeating the Pinata filled with candy. All good ninja deserve a little cake and ice cream after tough training.  Davin was spoiled by his friends and had fun opening his gifts. Davin and I had a quiet moment on the morning of his birthday. He turned eight on Sunday, May 19th and we went to the Tabernacle at Temple Square to see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir do their weekly broadcast-- The Music and the Spoken Word. Davin did a great job sitting and listening; he liked the colors and the music. We walked around Temple Square afterwards and took some pictures. I loved having that quiet little moment with my big eight year old! I am so excited for his big year! After church we had family and friends join us for a cookout and cake. Davin was showered with Ninjago Legos, his favorite!  We used some of Amy's leftover wedding cake for a birthday cake. Davin didn't seem to mind!  Instead of celebrating for just one day, we had to spread it out over a week (and we'll reincarnate it again in August when we have Davin's birthday).
