Peanuts and Crackerjacks

We spent the evening at a local minor league baseball stadium. Chris's school hosted a farewell event by renting out the ballpark, providing food, drinks, and a bouncer for the kids. Rowan fell asleep not long after we arrived and Davin spent the majority of the evening in the bouncer. In short, we had a lovely time. It was a nice finale for the many events that we have attended with Chris's classmates; we have had an entertaining experience with the opportunity to make wonderful friends and I know that we will look back on this time with great fondness. It has all happened to quickly and now we stand on the threshold of a phase in our lives when we should probably start acting more like grown-ups. I'm excited for our new house and new life, but I will admit that I'm sad to leave academia. It has been fun to be involved with school and not have to do the homework. I would say that Chris is ready to be done as well, but I think he will miss classes and not having to sit in an office all day long. However, we need to eat and thus we must move on and get a job. I was hanging out with my lovely MBA Partners friends the other night and we were talking about making the decision to come to school here. We had a slightly better offer that was very close to family, and it seemed like the logical choice to make. We felt right about Wake and decided to come here for that reason, and we don't regret our choice. I know that I needed to be here to meet certain people, like the many friends in our ward who have cared for us when we needed help the most and didn't have family close by. I really appreciate the friends from school, especially the MBA Partners who are such beautiful women, inside and out. I think that I haven't been dealing with the fact that I am saying goodbye because we are only moving an hour and a half away, but it will be a big change and many of our friends are not staying in Winston either. Although I wish I could capture this time and hold it immortal, there is an element of richness in my life that I will take as I progress and fond memories to hold dear.

I love the picture of Davin looking up at the wachovia building, standing in the garden of the Children's museum. It looks like he is saying good-bye to our city. (Which was probably on purpose, but I still love it)!

Katie, you are the essence of kindness and beauty in both words you write and in person. I am so glad you made the choice to come to school at Wake. Our ties go a little further back with our Mom’s. We would have never known that are paths crossed in another direction. I will always hold our friendship very dear.

I so know the feeling! Leaving CA was really hard, and we were even moving back home close to friends and family. But it's amazing how much your ward and friends become your family when you live away. I still ache for my CA friends and our little town.

Rowan Isaac Rees

The title of this blog also happens to be the name of our new baby. Rowan Isaac. Rowan is a Celtic name that means "little red one", and Isaac is a Hebrew name that means laughter. His initials (RIR) also spell the Portuguese verb "to laugh". So hopefully he will be a fun kid. We think he is already. He arrived today, November 28, 2007 at 2:15 pm (or thereabouts - I'll have to check the exact time). Both he and Katie are doing fine and resting a bit. He weighs 9 lbs, 2 oz., and as you can see from the picture, he has beautiful blond hair. He is a good little boy so far, and we're excited to have him in our family. Davin is with our good friends, the Smiths, this afternoon, but we think he understands a bit and is excited to meet his new little brother later this afternoon. We would like to thank you all for your love and your prayers, and hopefully we'll get a chance to talk to and see many of you soon so you can meet our little guy. If you want to see m...

Labor Day = No Labor

The fun part of moving is that we don't have to go far to find new adventures. For Labor Day we decided to head to the coast to explore. We started our day in Santa Cruz where we stopped for lunch but we didn't stay long. Our next stop was the Swanton Berry Farm where we picked strawberries. In September. In sweatshirts. My southern friends were shocked!  The next stop was Harley Goat Farm in Pescadero. We loved watching the goats and browsing through the goat cheese store. Rowan was brave and even tried a little! After the goat farm, we wandered around the Pescadero village and explored the markets. The boys were excited to find a gumball machine but I was more interested in the dahlia market and the fresh artichoke garlic herb bread in Arcangeli's Market (we got our loaf hot from the oven and oh. my. heavens!).  We ba...

Something to say

We were there in the kitchen, Rowan and I, when out of nowhere came this sound: “ma ma ba ma.” I stopped for a moment and repeated the sound to Rowan. He looked back at me and did it again: “ma ma ma ba.” This funny laugh bubbled out of me, the kind of laugh when you witness a miracle, something that someone told you was possible but you weren’t quite sure it was, but there it was in front of you, that perfect little miracle. I made the sound to Rowan again and he repeated it again. Picking him up, I spun him around, kissing him repeatedly. It was like a scene from a movie. I’m sure there were violins crescendo-ing somewhere and the audience was getting teary. “Be patient!” they told me, “it could be six months before he makes any kind of sound.” I was all prepared to be patient and I still am. There is a lot left to do. Even after this afternoon’s happy moment, I told myself that it could have been an accident or coincidence, but when he made the noises for Chris later this evening, I...
