Merry Christmas!

On Christmas Eve, we carry on Chris’s family tradition by having a large German dinner with Christmas cookies for dessert. It was my family’s tradition to light a German pyramid, which we now do with our boys. We talked about the Nativity; Davin dressed as a shepherd and Rowan was a king. We sang Christmas carols and before we even asked Davin if he was ready for bed, he bolted up the stairs and started getting himself ready. I thought for sure that it would take awhile to get the boys to settle down but both went to sleep rather quickly.

The next morning I woke up around 7:15. I looked at the clock in surprise, wondering where my 5:30 am wake-up crew was. Lying in bed, I waited to hear a thump of little feet hitting the floor and the click of their bedroom door. Waking at 7:15 is a usual wake-up time for the boys for any day, let alone Christmas. Unable to go back to sleep, I listened to the heavy rain outside, hoping some deep and profound Christmas thoughts would come my way, but alas there were none. Instead all I had was a funny twist in my stomach that only seems to come when anticipating going downstairs to see what Santa left under the tree. It was the same feeling that I had as a child, lying awake all night waiting for Christmas morning to come. Again I waited but still no little boys. Finally around 8, Davin came in and climbed into our bed. We waited a few minutes for Rowan and then sent Davin to wake him up. Rowan wasn’t too happy about it, but that soon changed as we made our descent down the stairs.

The boys unpacked their stockings first and it took awhile to get Rowan interested in anything else. He half-heartedly opened gifts with one hand, holding a candy cane with the other. Both boys would open a gift and then need a few minutes to play with it before moving on to another; it was a pleasant morning enjoying each gift instead of a frenzy of tearing paper. We took a break for breakfast which we enjoyed with a friend from our ward and the sister missionaries. We opened our remaining gifts with family via our web cameras. We were all very spoiled this year!

We spent our evening with friends enjoying a turkey dinner. It was wonderful to have the house filled with laughter and noisy kids having a good time. Merry Christmas!

I loved spending Christmas with my kids, even if it was by web cam. Hooray for web cams! And thanks for sharing! "Mom"

I love your mantle with the stockings - gorgeous!! I was shocked that my kids did much the same as yours - they didn't wake up until after 7:00 and then they were just happy talking to Leila and hanging out in our room for a while. It was a peaceful beginning to the day. I would have preferred a more casual pace of present opening, but that didn't happen with 14 people all opening presents here at my parents. :)

I love the play by play of the day. You took lots of pictures to remember the day. I bet it was a very nice day for all who visited the Rees home.

Rowan Isaac Rees

The title of this blog also happens to be the name of our new baby. Rowan Isaac. Rowan is a Celtic name that means "little red one", and Isaac is a Hebrew name that means laughter. His initials (RIR) also spell the Portuguese verb "to laugh". So hopefully he will be a fun kid. We think he is already. He arrived today, November 28, 2007 at 2:15 pm (or thereabouts - I'll have to check the exact time). Both he and Katie are doing fine and resting a bit. He weighs 9 lbs, 2 oz., and as you can see from the picture, he has beautiful blond hair. He is a good little boy so far, and we're excited to have him in our family. Davin is with our good friends, the Smiths, this afternoon, but we think he understands a bit and is excited to meet his new little brother later this afternoon. We would like to thank you all for your love and your prayers, and hopefully we'll get a chance to talk to and see many of you soon so you can meet our little guy. If you want to see m...

Labor Day = No Labor

The fun part of moving is that we don't have to go far to find new adventures. For Labor Day we decided to head to the coast to explore. We started our day in Santa Cruz where we stopped for lunch but we didn't stay long. Our next stop was the Swanton Berry Farm where we picked strawberries. In September. In sweatshirts. My southern friends were shocked!  The next stop was Harley Goat Farm in Pescadero. We loved watching the goats and browsing through the goat cheese store. Rowan was brave and even tried a little! After the goat farm, we wandered around the Pescadero village and explored the markets. The boys were excited to find a gumball machine but I was more interested in the dahlia market and the fresh artichoke garlic herb bread in Arcangeli's Market (we got our loaf hot from the oven and oh. my. heavens!).  We ba...

Something to say

We were there in the kitchen, Rowan and I, when out of nowhere came this sound: “ma ma ba ma.” I stopped for a moment and repeated the sound to Rowan. He looked back at me and did it again: “ma ma ma ba.” This funny laugh bubbled out of me, the kind of laugh when you witness a miracle, something that someone told you was possible but you weren’t quite sure it was, but there it was in front of you, that perfect little miracle. I made the sound to Rowan again and he repeated it again. Picking him up, I spun him around, kissing him repeatedly. It was like a scene from a movie. I’m sure there were violins crescendo-ing somewhere and the audience was getting teary. “Be patient!” they told me, “it could be six months before he makes any kind of sound.” I was all prepared to be patient and I still am. There is a lot left to do. Even after this afternoon’s happy moment, I told myself that it could have been an accident or coincidence, but when he made the noises for Chris later this evening, I...
