The rest of the story

Wow! You must all be dying from suspense! I started telling our Utah trip story and didn't finish! So here goes:

After New Year's weekend, everyone else left. Tiff and John were on their honeymoon in the Caribbean, Jere, Haley, and Matt went back to BYU, and Amy went to Taiwan with my cousin Annie to teach English to preschoolers. Though we were sad to see them go, we loved having Grandpa and Grandma to ourselves.

We decided that this trip was a great opportunity to introduce the boys to skiing. Alta Ski Resort has a free rope tow and their beginner lift is free after 3 pm. We rented skis for the boys (about $10 each) and then arrived at Alta around 2 PM. Rowan had a hard time with his boots and subsequently fell asleep on Grandma's lap who sacrificed her afternoon of snowshoeing to let him sleep (thanks Mom!!!). Davin got his gear on without too much trouble and hit the slopes with Grandpa who is a champion teacher. It didn't take Davin long to get the hang of going down the rope tow hill and we had time to do one run on the beginner lift before heading home. Davin loved the ride up; he got to ride with Grandpa and he thought the lift was awesome. The ride down was a little harder; Davin's gloves weren't sufficient for skiing and he got a little cold and tired. Luckily my dad was able to help him down the mountain and into the car. The first day of skiing can be tough but I thought Davin did really well and I loved having the option of giving him the opportunity to try without investing too much. It takes the pressure off of getting the "most" for your money.

My mom volunteers at the Church History Museum near Temple Square in Salt Lake City and they recently opened a new children's exhibit. It was amazing and if you haven't already gone, you should go! They boys had a great time playing with all of the cool, interactive exhibits. One of their favorites was an interactive video that taught Mexican dancing. They had some pretty great moves!

On our last day before leaving, we went to watch Jimmer Freddette and the rest of the BYU guys play basketball. Jimmer played Air Force and he had an okay game, which still resulted in a win. We met Matt, Jere, Haley, and Chris's brother Brian at the game and finished off the evening with pizza at the Brick Oven, a Provo classic. BTW, they have an amazing balloon master working the crowd at B.O. He made a Darth Vader and Shaun the Sheep for my boys and they were amazing! We had a great time seeing the team play live and we are super excited about the upcoming Madness!!! (Anyone interested in watching? We'll have the games and a party to go with it!)

the end.

Wasn't that worth the wait?

P.S. There is something sneaky about one of my BYU pictures. Can you figure out what it is?

I flew to Taiwan and missed out on the party! I'm glad you guys had such a fabulous time. Seeing Dad with Davin skiing totally takes me back about 18 years. He really is such a patient teacher. We were lucky to learn under a master. ;)

Man, now I am totally curious...what's the sneaky?

Katie... This was such a fun game! The only thing I noticed was that one of the pictures of the court looked maroon... Is that it? Was it from a different game or something?

Those are great tips re: skiing. My kids really want to go when we head to Utah in April but I don't want to spend a small fortune. We'll have to look into the Alta option. And I recently heard of the Church History museum's new exhibit from someone else, as well - it sounds amazing!! One more thing on our to-do list for Utah. We're going for 3 weeks because there are so many things I'm looking forward to doing there!

Rowan Isaac Rees

The title of this blog also happens to be the name of our new baby. Rowan Isaac. Rowan is a Celtic name that means "little red one", and Isaac is a Hebrew name that means laughter. His initials (RIR) also spell the Portuguese verb "to laugh". So hopefully he will be a fun kid. We think he is already. He arrived today, November 28, 2007 at 2:15 pm (or thereabouts - I'll have to check the exact time). Both he and Katie are doing fine and resting a bit. He weighs 9 lbs, 2 oz., and as you can see from the picture, he has beautiful blond hair. He is a good little boy so far, and we're excited to have him in our family. Davin is with our good friends, the Smiths, this afternoon, but we think he understands a bit and is excited to meet his new little brother later this afternoon. We would like to thank you all for your love and your prayers, and hopefully we'll get a chance to talk to and see many of you soon so you can meet our little guy. If you want to see m...

Labor Day = No Labor

The fun part of moving is that we don't have to go far to find new adventures. For Labor Day we decided to head to the coast to explore. We started our day in Santa Cruz where we stopped for lunch but we didn't stay long. Our next stop was the Swanton Berry Farm where we picked strawberries. In September. In sweatshirts. My southern friends were shocked!  The next stop was Harley Goat Farm in Pescadero. We loved watching the goats and browsing through the goat cheese store. Rowan was brave and even tried a little! After the goat farm, we wandered around the Pescadero village and explored the markets. The boys were excited to find a gumball machine but I was more interested in the dahlia market and the fresh artichoke garlic herb bread in Arcangeli's Market (we got our loaf hot from the oven and oh. my. heavens!).  We ba...

Something to say

We were there in the kitchen, Rowan and I, when out of nowhere came this sound: “ma ma ba ma.” I stopped for a moment and repeated the sound to Rowan. He looked back at me and did it again: “ma ma ma ba.” This funny laugh bubbled out of me, the kind of laugh when you witness a miracle, something that someone told you was possible but you weren’t quite sure it was, but there it was in front of you, that perfect little miracle. I made the sound to Rowan again and he repeated it again. Picking him up, I spun him around, kissing him repeatedly. It was like a scene from a movie. I’m sure there were violins crescendo-ing somewhere and the audience was getting teary. “Be patient!” they told me, “it could be six months before he makes any kind of sound.” I was all prepared to be patient and I still am. There is a lot left to do. Even after this afternoon’s happy moment, I told myself that it could have been an accident or coincidence, but when he made the noises for Chris later this evening, I...
