What really makes a mother's day...

Rowan invited me for "Muffins with Mom" at his school!

He loves learning about the butterfly life cycle. They had a fun time watching the caterpillars turn to butterflies in their classroom.

Rowan painted a pot for me!

Today was lovely! I spent all day yesterday digging and planting in the yard, fell asleep to the sound of rain, then woke up to a fresh world newly planted and devoid of weeds (for the moment). Chris didn't have meetings so he made me crepes instead. He is the best crepe maker and I love them! I can't make them nearly as good as he does. Church was great today as well. They gave the sisters beautiful red roses and I got to sing with the nursery kids which is always a lot of fun. After church we went to our friends' home for dinner where we enjoyed perfect weather on their patio. It was a lovely day and I'm really celebrating motherhood right now. I am having a great time with my boys right now and really loving the thought of the new little one on the way. We found out this week that she is going to be a she! We are having a little girl and we can't wait!

As much fun as it was to be pampered and remembered, there are a couple of moments that really made my Mother's Day. We were driving in the car on the way to church and the boys were excited about Mother's Day, in particular Rowan. At one point Rowan looked at me and I could see his eyes getting a little teary as the emotion welled inside of him; he looked straight into my eyes and said "I love you, Mom! I love you, Mom!" He has said it many times before but at that moment I could see that he really felt it, that he understood in his five year old way what it meant to really love someone and how wonderful that feeling is. He is a sweet boy filled with so much tenderness, I have no doubt that he will continue to feel that feeling throughout the rest of his life, but it was a treasured moment to see it for the first time. The second moment happened later today when I received an email from our Primary secretary apologizing for that fact that she failed to notify us that Davin was assigned a talk in Primary this week. Apparently they called Davin up to the stand to give a talk and he informed them that he didn't have one ready. Our sweet Primary President saw a picture of the temple and asked if Davin wanted to share something about the temple. Instead of getting upset and shy, he stood at the pulpit and bore his testimony about temples and families. He loves the idea that we are married in the temple and that we can be a family forever. For all those times when we wonder "are they listening" it is so exciting when your child shares that information and it becomes his information, something he understand and believes. Davin has a sweet testimony and it is so exciting to watch it grow as he makes progress towards his baptism.

Motherhood isn't perfect nor is it easy, and there was a time when I wondered if it was the path for me. I would inwardly roll my eyes at some of the trite and sentimental things said about the profession. Instead it has been a rich and lovely experience that has deepened my understanding of life and the gospel, and any aspirations I had previously to this experience seem pretty shallow at this point. What a succinct and beautiful honor it is to bring another human life into this world and how humbling it is to be responsible for shaping the world for your child's success in it. I hope I never take a moment of it for granted or that my children never question my devotion.

Rowan Isaac Rees

The title of this blog also happens to be the name of our new baby. Rowan Isaac. Rowan is a Celtic name that means "little red one", and Isaac is a Hebrew name that means laughter. His initials (RIR) also spell the Portuguese verb "to laugh". So hopefully he will be a fun kid. We think he is already. He arrived today, November 28, 2007 at 2:15 pm (or thereabouts - I'll have to check the exact time). Both he and Katie are doing fine and resting a bit. He weighs 9 lbs, 2 oz., and as you can see from the picture, he has beautiful blond hair. He is a good little boy so far, and we're excited to have him in our family. Davin is with our good friends, the Smiths, this afternoon, but we think he understands a bit and is excited to meet his new little brother later this afternoon. We would like to thank you all for your love and your prayers, and hopefully we'll get a chance to talk to and see many of you soon so you can meet our little guy. If you want to see m...

Labor Day = No Labor

The fun part of moving is that we don't have to go far to find new adventures. For Labor Day we decided to head to the coast to explore. We started our day in Santa Cruz where we stopped for lunch but we didn't stay long. Our next stop was the Swanton Berry Farm where we picked strawberries. In September. In sweatshirts. My southern friends were shocked!  The next stop was Harley Goat Farm in Pescadero. We loved watching the goats and browsing through the goat cheese store. Rowan was brave and even tried a little! After the goat farm, we wandered around the Pescadero village and explored the markets. The boys were excited to find a gumball machine but I was more interested in the dahlia market and the fresh artichoke garlic herb bread in Arcangeli's Market (we got our loaf hot from the oven and oh. my. heavens!).  We ba...

Something to say

We were there in the kitchen, Rowan and I, when out of nowhere came this sound: “ma ma ba ma.” I stopped for a moment and repeated the sound to Rowan. He looked back at me and did it again: “ma ma ma ba.” This funny laugh bubbled out of me, the kind of laugh when you witness a miracle, something that someone told you was possible but you weren’t quite sure it was, but there it was in front of you, that perfect little miracle. I made the sound to Rowan again and he repeated it again. Picking him up, I spun him around, kissing him repeatedly. It was like a scene from a movie. I’m sure there were violins crescendo-ing somewhere and the audience was getting teary. “Be patient!” they told me, “it could be six months before he makes any kind of sound.” I was all prepared to be patient and I still am. There is a lot left to do. Even after this afternoon’s happy moment, I told myself that it could have been an accident or coincidence, but when he made the noises for Chris later this evening, I...
