Like father, like son

Though he spends most of his day with me, Davin spends most of his energy imitating his dad. I am completely satisfied with the many giggles and silly moments that I know are mine, but it amazes me how much Davin follows his dad. For instance, Chris and Davin like to play with his basketball set and Chris will exclaim "Nice shot!", "Excellent shot!", and "Fantastic shot!" when Davin makes a basket. When Davin and I play, I'm in the habit of saying "Good shot!". Though he knows the word "good", he has never once said "Good shot!", but will consistently repeat his dad's exclamations (though the words are more difficult). Down the street from where we live there is a park with a disc golf course and a playground. The other night when we went to the park, Davin didn't want to play at the playground with me but instead he insisted on following his dad and helping him throw his "wheels" (what he calls the discs...

Ribs and Friends (and homemade soda)

June 14th-16th marks an important anniversary for Winston-Salem; the annual Tri City Rib Festival fills the downtown area with a sweet and smoky smell, which attracts all kinds of folk. Our friends, Amanda and Justin Brown of Charlottesville, VA, joined us in Winston for the ribs. We also met up with our friends Jason and Grayson from Chris's MBA program. I was honored to attend the festival with some real rib experts from Texas (Amanda, Justin, and Chris) who reported that the bbq was good, but perhaps a little over-priced. Unfortunately our baby-on-the-way does not care much for bbq, so I didn't get to try very much. Davin liked the bbq, but was particularly fond of the homemade soda. Even if the bbq was terrible, it still would have been a fun weekend. We had a great time hanging out with Amanda and Justin. Davin made a new golf buddy in Justin (whom he affectionately called Just); they watched golf together and played with Davin's toy golf set. For more pictures, plea...

Fumaça Rees

Rabbit, pet, friend, and family member, Fumaça Rees passed away on Tuesday, June 5th, 2007. Born in Orange, Virginia in October 2004, Fumaça was a handsome full breed Netherland Dwarf rabbit with black fur and white trimming ("Fumaça" is Portuguese for smoke). A good friend who was always willing to lend an ear, he also enjoyed a healthy serving of greens and apples. He patiently played with children, particularly Davin, though they probably made too much noise for him. Fumaça was a brave rabbit who recently fought off a nasty ear infection. His untimely death was caused by an unknown assassin who attacked him while Fumaça played in his outdoor pen. He is survived by his family, Chris, Katie, and Davin Rees, as well as those friends who helped care for him, particularly Bronwyn Blackwood. In lieu of flowers, please enjoy a nice apple in his honor.

Davin's big break

For any of you who are interested, here is a picture of Davin's first broken bone.

Davinisms

We are doting parents, there is no doubt. Bear with us as we bore you with a list of things that Davin says and does that make us smile. Davin is acquiring a good vocabulary of food words and we can tell when he is hungry as he starts to rattle them off. Some favorites include: hamburger, corn dog (two foods we don't eat very often but he seems to like saying them), strawberries, strawberry jam, birthday cake, and pickles. Lately he has become very proud of his tummy and pulls up his shirt to show us how he can push his own button. He loves pushing buttons and was excited to find out that he in fact had a button of his own. It is a good thing he is only two or we would be a little worried about his vanity. He is constantly referring to himself as "handsome" and will walk around the house saying "yay Davin!" Some of our favorite phrases include: "How's it going?" "How's your day?" "'Sup dudes?" "Oh dear!" and a ...

Not enough Rees' in the world

So we decided to have another one. Yes, we are pregnant. We are thirteen weeks into the pregnancy and we are due December 5th. So far, everything is going well, or at least as well as can be expected. At my twelve-week appointment, the doctor had an easy time finding a strong little heart beat . We are excited to add to our little family!

Happy Birthday Davin!

Davin celebrated his second birthday on May 19 th . As his mean parents, we made him move to yet another new place and another new bed (in Raleigh, see post below). We tried to make it up to him by taking him to Chucky Cheese (where a kid can be a kid and apparently parents can act a little childish too). He seemed mesmerized by the lights and noise, but unfortunately the games were a little too big for him. He helped Chris play basketball and we won enough tickets to exchange for an airplane and a goofy little top that fell apart by the time we got to the car. At least the pizza was digestible . Because he was too tired, we decided to postpone gifts and cake until the next day. After eating birthday m anicotti , it was time for birthday cake and birthday presents. As we are such wise parents, we decided to get him a red velvet cake (I had never tried one), which he seemed to love, perhaps too much. We tried to triage the situation by taking off his shirt, but he is clever in his ways...
