We had a great time playing in the Outer Banks. Generally considered a summer vacation spot, it is actually a lot of fun in the winter time as well if you are content to play like a land lubber (actually we did see a few brave souls surfing). One benefit of traveling to the OBX in the winter is that the house prices are comparatively cheap (our house was 1/3 the price of peak weeks in July). We loved the house that we stayed in; it was the perfect size for our family with ample room left over. It had all of the equipment we needed for babies, Christmas cooking, etc. The hot tub and fire place made it a comfortable winter stay and the large game room with Foosball, air hockey, pool table, and video game equipment added to the things to do.
Even though we couldn't go into the lighthouses, they were definitely worth seeing.
Davin made a new friend at the Bodie Lighthouse: a twelve-week old puppy named Jasper. The two of them enjoyed playing with Davin's soccer ball.
Our house was fairly close to the Bodie Lighthouse and the Cape Hatteras lighthouse was only a 40 minute drive from there.
One disadvantage of staying at the OBX in the winter is that the sun sets in the late afternoon, so the amount of daylight is a little limited. We didn't have time to go to the Ocracoke Lighthouse, which is on my list of things to do when I come back.
The aquarium in Manteo was neat, though the large shark in one tank made me think that I will stay near the shore when I swim in the ocean.
We visited the Wright Brothers Memorial and it was amazing to think that we have been flying for just over a hundred years. Our favorite activity was buying a kite at the Kitty Hawk Kite store and flying it on the huge sand dunes that Kitty Hawk is famous for.
I would definitely like to go back to the OBX when the weather is a little warmer and enjoy the beach, but we had a great time even if we had to wear coats and jackets.
